Choose the right charger
The most important choice you make is which charger you choose. The choice has the greatest impact on the time it takes to charge. It’s also important from a safety point of view – as most of us leave chargers unattended all the time or several hours a day, it’s important not to buy a bad copy of Apple’s charger that does not comply with electrical safety regulations and can cause a fire .

There are good third-party chargers as well, such as adapters for charging in the car, but here we focus on the different chargers Apple offers:
- USB port on Mac
- Iphone charger
- Ipad charger
The iPhone charger is limited to 5 watts and 1 amp. The iPad charger for newer models of the toad has 12 watts and 2.4 amps, while the older one had 10 watts and 2.1 amps.
Update 27/12: It seems that the iPad Air 2 again has a 10-watt charger as standard, while Apple continues to sell the 12-watt charger as an accessory. Thanks to Christer for the tip.
The USB ports in the Mac differ between different Macs. Older machines that only have usb 2.0 have only 2.5 watts and 0.5 amps and are thus by far the slowest for charging. With usb 3.0, you get 0.9 amps at 5 volts, which means 4.5 watts.
You can see for yourself how much power your Iphone or Ipad gets from the Mac by choosing Apple -> About This Computer -> System Report and clicking USB. Here you see how a Mac Pro (2013) gives 2.1 amps.
But if you connect an Apple product directly to a Mac with USB 3.0 (or Thunderbolt Display), it can provide a little more power and get 1.1 amps or 5.5 watts – slightly more than the iPhone charger in other words. It only works in OS X and not through a hub. On some really new models, you can pull a full 2.1 amps from the USB 3.0 connector.
